Music Community Introduces New Labelling Program to Distinguish Generative AI in Sound Recordings

A broad coalition of the global music community – including IFPI, RIAA, A2IM, WIN, IMPALA, The Grammys, SAG-AFTRA and the Human Artistry Campaign – has announced a unified voluntary track labelling program to provide greater transparency for fans about the use of generative AI in sound recordings.

Under the new framework, recordings will be distinguished between “AI-Generated” (wholly created by AI) and “AI-Assisted” (where AI was used by human artists in limited ways to support, but not replace, their creativity). The labels are designed to be easily understood by listeners and scalable for global adoption across digital music services and other platforms.

As IFPI and RIAA noted in a joint statement: “Fans want to know whether and how generative AI has been used in the music to which they listen. Given how important human artistry and authenticity is to music lovers all over the world, these labels will provide an immediately understandable and easily scalable approach to transparency.”

This initiative arrives at a critical moment – recent reports indicate that AI-generated tracks now represent a significant portion of new music uploaded to streaming platforms. The labelling program represents a major step forward in helping fans make informed choices while supporting the human creativity that lies at the heart of the music we all love.
